Pendal Poppy Gets a Puppy by De Anna Moyes

Summary

When Poppy and her mother are out together, they come upon a playpen of puppies from the local pet adoption center. Poppy is overjoyed when she is allowed to bring one home as her very own—a happy pup born with three legs who she thinks is perfect. Her two mommies and grandpa use their skills to make it easier for their adorable new addition to get around. The pair become inseparable…now if only Poppy could choose the perfect name for her new pup!

Vibrant jewel-toned illustrations bring alive this sweet story of compassion. Families and educators of young children will be delighted with its diverse range of characters, featuring a multi-ethnic and LGBTQ+  family.

Reaction

I enjoyed Poppy Pendal Gets a Puppy because it perfectly captures both the joy of a first pet and the beauty of family of all kinds.

The story is beautifully written and illustrated and does a wonderful and very organic and seamless job of creating relatable characters -- of both the canine and human kind! -- that feature unique differences and the love of family in all its iterations. But the real story is one of compassion and empathy, about generations of family, a life skill that will endure with the little girl.

A great addition to any classroom, library, or home bookshelf.
