At the Edge of the Ice, Eco Warriors Book One
Eleven-year-old Sydney and her twin sister Sierra are with their photojournalist parents near the North Pole, where they are exploring the Arctic ecosystem. An accident causes Sydney to wake up with the ability to communicate with animals. A seal named Ringo asks her for help, telling her that loss of habitat and global warming have pushed their ecosystem to the brink of collapse. But what can Sydney and Sierra do to help? They’re just kids, right? An encounter with a polar bear has the girls understanding just how interconnected they all are.
As a book professional and a mom of three readers, a lot of middle-grade books come my way. What grabbed me first about this debut intsallment in the series is the masterful writing, what kept me hooked was the fascinating content. It's clear that Carolyn Armstrong loves what she is writing about and is incredibly knowledgeable about this important and topical subject. As a parent, it's great to know that my kids are engaging through reading, and even better knowing that they are learning something that will be critical in their lifetime. Great writing and great for the planet.
